I walked back down the hallway to the Book Room, ready to reconvene with the others. While I had originally wanted to evacuate the whole temple and perhaps discuss more in Arkham, I decided that Ursula actually made a good point. We really didn’t know enough about the temple yet to justify getting everyone out. Hopefully though, we would know enough soon. If Yorick made it out safely, then that’s at least 3 people on the other side who will be able to help. It would seem then that a small team is coming together back in Arkham even without everyone here leaving.
I made it back and…
Everyone was gone.
The room was empty. No one was there. Not even the book.
Just Roland Banks, alone.
“Finn,” Roland said, slowly walking up to me. I had seen too much weird stuff today and even though I had no real reason to distrust Roland, I was already bracing myself for anything. “Glad you made it back. Calvin and Jenny have already taken everyone else into the North Room. They had Agnes bring the book, too. We made a big discovery.”
My senses were telling me something was wrong. Very, very wrong.
“You said Calvin and Jenny. Where’s Rex?”
Roland paused for a little too long. “He’s with them.”
“I see,” I said.
“I was told to wait here for you to come back.”
“To escort me into the North Room? You couldn’t leave a note. Or wait and have everyone leave together? You had to stay here, alone, so that just you and me could go over there.”
Roland didn’t say anything.
“It’s not that complicated, Finn.”
“Where’s Silas’ body?”
Roland blinked. “What are you talking about?”
“When I left, Silas’ body was in the corner of the room. He was dead. Now his body is gone. None of us here would have moved it. We knew what dangers were in the other rooms of the temple, and besides, we had no real urgent need to move it either. So why is his body gone now?”
“I think you’re overthinking things, Finn,” Roland said. “A lot has happened in the time it took you to leave and come back.”
“I’ve been gone about ten minutes. So you had better have a good story for this.”
“We don’t have time,” Roland said. “You got to rejoin the rest of us in the North-”
I pulled out my gun and pointed it right at Roland’s head.
“I think I’m going to decide how much time we have, Roland.”
“You don’t want to do that,” Roland said.
“Oh, I think I do,” I said. “I happen to know as well that you don’t have a gun, because Agnes and Wendy both told me that you dropped it downstairs. So, right now, I make the rules. And the rules are you show me where Silas’ body went or I shoot you.”
We locked eyes. Then, wordlessly, Roland nodded. I lowered my gun. Roland started walking towards the West Room. I followed close behind. I realized as I followed him that I didn’t particularly know what was in the West Room. If anything went down, I would make sure to strike first, without question.
When we made it, I saw many locked iron doors. Behind the doors, I could hear weird noises – breathing, crunching, huffing. I assumed there must be beasts behind these doors.
Roland pointed at one of the doors. “We put his body in there.”
“Why?”
“Why?” Roland repeated, sounding exasperated. “I… Finn, we can’t leave a dead body in the room like that. There’s no dignity in that.”
“You left Daisy’s body so I don’t believe that for a second,” I said.
Roland sighed. “Well, the body’s in there.”
“With the beast? You fed his dead body to some beast?”
“No, this one is empty.”
“Prove it. Open the door. Let me see.”
“I can’t open the door. Finn… we had to use Preston’s scepter to open the door. It acts as a sort of skeleton key in the temple. Opens all kinds of doors.”
That’s when I shot him in the head.
As his body collapsed in front of me, I blew the smoke off my gun and sneered.
“There’s no way you could have known that, traitor.”
I turned around as fast as I could and hurried to the North Room. The beginning of the end was upon us.
